Secure POP and IMAP Email Client Setup

Secure access to internal BNL email servers via the POP and IMAP protocols from outside the laboratory is now available.  A system called smail.bnl.gov has been set up for this purpose.

To utilize this service do the following:

  • Provide the name of the internal email server you receive email from
  • Provide the account name you use to authenticate to that email server
  • Select either POP or IMAP access method

Email the above information to popimap@bnl.gov or use our online Request Access Form.

How to configure your email client

Incoming Server - Retrieving Email From Internal Servers
  • Set the incoming email server to be smail.bnl.gov
  • For secure IMAP - set the port number to 993 and the connection to use SSL always.
  • For secure POP - set the port number to 995 and the connection to use SSL always.
Outgoing Server - Sending Email

You may use smail.bnl.gov for outgoing email delivery as well.

  • Set the outgoing email server to be smail.bnl.gov
  • Set the port number to 2525
  • Set the connection to never use SSL
